| Allotments |
It is thought that over a quarter of a million
people hold allotments in England and Wales, a huge reduction
compared with the 1.5 million listed during World War II. In
many areas there are now very long waiting lists for plots.
In Streatley there are a few but the soil is of bad quality
and the lack of fencing and a permanent water supply is a problem.
However, some people do use these allotments to great benefit.
Some months ago Streatley Parish Council was approached by some
residents of Streatley to see if there was an option of alternative
allotments or an improvement in the existing ones. The existing
ones are owned by Thames Water and they have never enforced
leases on allotment holders. Equally they have never offered
any improvement to them.
This is a matter to which the SPC is turning its attention as
sustainability of food supplies is something that will become
of greater relevance to our lives as food security becomes more
vulnerable.
In the meantime there are some people with larger gardens who
are willing to have them used for vegetable plots by people
with less land (in exchange for a few free veg). If you are
interested then please contact Nicola
Swan. |
